With the growth in popularity of the Winneshiek Farmers Market, the current location in the 48-hour parking lot across from City Hall is beginning to be too cramped--especially with nine recycling bins also located on the lot.
Several Farmers Market representatives appeared before the Decorah City Council Monday night to ask that the recycling bins be moved so that additional booths could be set up for the Farmers Market. But City Street Superintendent Dave Tollefson told city council members he's reluctant to move the bins from their current location because "everybody loves it."
City council members then spent time trying to figure out how to make both the recycling and the Farmers Market be able to share the same space. They settled on a temporary agreement to put up no parking signs on the Claiborne Drive portion of the parking lot, which will give the Farmers Market more booth space but won't require moving the recycling bins.
But city council members agreed that a better long-term solution would be to move the Farmers Market across the street to the Lower Fareway lot. They will vote on that proposal June 4th.
