(NOTE: What follows is a JOKE--it is NOT real!!)

Plans have been announced to combine Decorah's Syttende Mai celebration, which honors the signing of the Norwegian constitution, with Cinco de Mayo, which celebrates Mexican culture.  The new holiday will be referred to as "Syttende Cinco."

Said Syttende Cinco spokesperson Ole Martinez, "The idea first came about when we realized that lefse and tortillas are basically the same food."

In Decorah the new holiday will be observed by having the Nordic Dancers perform their famous Sombrero Dance.  Following the performance, young children will be invited to swing ski poles at a pinata fashioned in the shape of a gnome.  Adults will be invited to the Elks Lodge to sample the new taco-flavored akvakit.

Added Martinez, "
The day really is a celebration of the multiethnicity of Decorah.  If this is a success, we plan to also celebrate trettondedag kippur."

(We hope this made you laugh!  Again--this is NOT REAL!!)
