Ask Mr. Answer Person: "Does anyone recycle textiles in Decorah?"

Posted: Tue, May 15, 2012 4:20 PM

Stacy asks Mr. Answer Person if there is any place in Decorah that recycles textiles.

Mr. Answer Person says: Yes, the Depot Outlet recycles textiles.  They try to sell clothes in their store, but sometimes items are just not fit to sell.  Among the items the Depot Outlet recycles are clothes that are stained, have holes in them or are too far out of style.

The Depot Outlet doesn't recycle socks and underwear (those go to the landfill), but it does recycle blankets, bedding and just about any other kind of textile.

Donations intended for recycling should be labeled as such when dropped off at the Depot Outlet.

Goodwill Industries also recycles clothing at its Decorah store, as well as books, metals, belts, totebags and purses, stuffed animals, shoes, metals and cardboard.

Goodwill also accepts computer monitors and equipment, but not television sets.

The Spectrum Network also recycles clothes and other textiles in Decorah.  All the money from those donated and recycled items goes to support programs for Individuals with disabilities who often face barriers to work and life.
