NICC Calmar's Rockefeller Alternative High School has received a $300 grant from the Iowa Association of Alternative Education to purchase a stove for their Foods and Life Skills class.

The updated kitchen will allow students to reap the benefits of healthy, home-cooked foods; to increase opportunities for service projects; and to build classroom community.

"An updated kitchen facility will help us deliver practical, hands-on learning experiences within the walls of our classroom," said instructor Dawn Shattuck.

Up to 40 students each year enroll at the Rockefeller Alternative High School.  The school uses its kitchen area to host potlucks, classroom lunches and weekly Waffle Wednesday breakfasts. The Food and Life Skills class offers instructors an opportunity to teach students critical skills in nutrition and diet, cooking and preparing healthy meals, and teamwork.
