ArtHaus Summer Programs for Youth begin June 4th

Posted: Thu, May 10, 2012 5:51 PM

ArtHaus, Decorah's home for the visual, performing, and literary arts, is now accepting registration for the summer session.  There is space available in a variety of camps and classes for youth, ages 4-15, with discounts for early registration through May 15.

ArtHaus will kick off summer programming with Girl Power!,  a camp  for young women ages 12-15, which runs June 4-8 from 9am to 1pm at the ArtHaus Studio.  Sponsored by HAWC Partnerships for Children and Community Circle of Care, this camp is FREE to all participants. Guided by teaching artist Alyssa Ritter, participants will deconstruct images of women in popular culture, challenging stereotypes and exploring female identity.  Students will express their own ideas through painting, collage, clay, and more.

Boys and girls ages 12-15 are invited to register for The Art of Drawing Comics with comic artist Dan Bruins, which runs June 11-July 16 (6 weeks) on Monday evenings from 6 to 8pm at the ArtHaus Studio.

For students ages 6-8, ArtHaus offers Little Masters: All Things Big and Small, an all-day camp which runs June 11-15 or June 18-22, from 9am to 3pm.  Students will create giant sculptures of food, miniature self portraits, and human-sized insects while exploring painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, and clay during the week-long camp. Students will split the day between ArtHaus Studio and the Clay Studio, culminating with a showcase of their artwork on the last day.

Popular culture is the subject of Pop Art: Mixed Media, a camp for students age 9-12, which runs June 11-15 or June 18-22 from 9am to 3pm, exploring a variety of art materials including clay sculpture and silkscreened t-shirts.  Pop Art campers will split their day between the Clay Studio and ArtHaus Studio, and will exhibit their artwork in a gallery show at the end of the week.

For younger students age 4-5, Mini-Masters: All About Me is a one-week, half-day art camp which runs June 25-29.  Students choose between a morning session from 9am to noon, or an afternoon session from 1-4pm. Projects include life-size, three-dimensional self-portraits and other activities exploring self and the world around us.  Students will work with paint, oil and chalk pastels, and mixed media collages during daily "open studio" time. Northeast Iowa Montessori Director Jennifer Jones will be the teaching artist for this week of camp.

Thanks to a successful annual Garden Party and Art Auction fundraiser, partial and full scholarships are available to all youth programs. The ArtHaus Youth Scholarship Fund is supported by Friends of ArtHaus, The Depot Outlet, and The McElroy Trust.  To apply for tuition assistance, inquire upon registration.
