The Spectrum Network is hosting a display of Dutch Baroque artwork created by Luther students.
During January a group of students worked with Luther art historian Dr. Kate Elliot and Luther painter Ben More to learn more about the golden age of Dutch painting, the Baroque.
Luther students painted both a more direct imitation of a classic work and also a contemporary interpretation of Dutch Baroque subjects and techniques.
Baroque art is characterized by drama, deep color, and the presence of both intense light and very dark shadows. Noted painters of the period include Rembrandt, Johannes Vermeer and Frans Hals. Their subject matter went away from religious work and the grand portrait towards landscapes, still life and more intimate and expressive portraiture.
Visitors to the exhibit at The Spectrum Network, which is open during regular business hours during April, will see variety in subject matter and also evidence of handmade pigment and paint on linen canvas as well as on board.
