Coordinators still seeking volunteers for the "Decorah Reads!" program

Posted: Tue, Apr 10, 2012 3:18 PM

Coordinators of the Decorah Reads! program say they still need nine volunteers a May session.  Decorah Reads! is a partnership between Decorah Public Library and Kris Lynch's seventh grade exploratory reading class.  The program matches adult volunteers with seventh grade students for three book discussion meetings.  Volunteers make a commitment to attend all three meetings.

Students choose a fiction book to read and adult volunteers find their student match by selecting a book from the students' list of titles.  As a pair, the volunteer and student both read the book and meet to discuss it.

Through the Decorah Reads! program students learn about discussing a book with another person and they also receive encouragement from their adult partner.  Adult volunteers have the opportunity to revisit childhood favorites, experience what is currently popular in young adult fiction, and to nurture their partners' enjoyment of reading.

For the May session, adults may pick books up at the Decorah Public Library beginning at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 26th.  Meeting dates include Thursday, May 3rd; Thursday, May 10th; and Thursday, May 17th.  The first two meetings will be held at Decorah Public Library from 2:10 p.m. until 2:35 p.m.  The final meeting will take place from 2:10 p.m. until 2:40 p.m. at Decorah Middle School.

Please call Decorah Public Library at 563-382-3717 for more information or to sign up as a volunteer.
