The deadline for filing nomination papers to run for a spot on the Winneshiek County Board is Wednesday, March 28th. So far, 11 people have announced plans to run for one of the five county board positions.
In two districts--District #3 and District #4--there is just one candidate. Incumbent Les Askelson is unopposed so far in District #3, while incumbent John Logsdon is unopposed so fair in District #4.
There are two candidates in District #1. Incumbent Bill Ibanez is the only Democrat running, while former county board chairman Dean Darling is the only Republican running.
The other two supervisor districts have a total of seven announced candidates.
In District #5, incumbent Lonnie Pierce will face a Republican Party primary challenge from former supervisor Gordon Hunter. Democrat Mark Kuhn is now the only Democratic candidate after Mike Ryan announced he was withdrawing from the race and throwing his support to Kuhn.
In District #2, four candidates will be on the ballot. Republicans Ron Onsager and Floyd Ashbacher will face off in a September primary, then the winner will face two candidates in November--Democrat Rachel Vagts and Independent John Franzen--both who currently serve on the Decorah City Council.
