Progress continues on high school renovation

The Decorah Community School Board heard more updates on the high school renovation at their Monday night meeting. Superintendent Mike Haluska said that the project was doing well in regard to a reasonable number of "change orders" and that the cost trending on the project was on track. Other updates included:

The District Shop and the Woodshop are now substantially complete and are being used by the school for storage as other areas continue in transition.
The old gym is virtually demolished. Although some materials have been recycled, some items such as the gym floor were unable to be removed in salvageable condition.
Removal of asbestos from the roof area on the north end of the Art Room will begin tomorrow.
The floor materials for the new gym have arrived and installation will begin shortly.

In other related business the Board heard from School Specialty Furniture and Equipment regarding furniture. About 90 percent of the current classroom furniture is being replaced. The old furniture will be sold at auction. School Specialty was awarded a contract for nearly $375,000, which could increase to about $413,000 if a local vendor is unable to match pricing on some of the furniture items. Special bids were not required on the project due to School Specialties being part of an approved buying program that has already done competitive bidding with their sub-vendors.
