In another four or five days the deconstruction of the Caretakers House at Wellington Place ought to be complete.
Crews from a Dubuque company, TSC Construction, have been working at the site, removing materials for resale. Company president Ted Stakis says the project "is working out nicely." His crew has been able to removed doors, flooring and lumber from the building and resell them locally.
Stakis says 90 percent of the hard bricks and around half of the soft bricks have been salvaged, with one customer buying 13 pallets of bricks.
Stakis says if the weather holds, the deconstruction project ought to be finished in four or five work days
The deconstruction technique is a way of salvaging material, keeping it out of the landfill and making it available to interested buyers for reuse.
In the case of the Caretaker's House, it is estimated that 80 to 90 percent of the materials will be kept out of the landfill.
