Budget cuts may be coming for Winneshiek County roads

The Iowa Legislature had given signs earlier this year that it was willing to approve a gas tax increase for 2013, creating more funds for road projects throughout the state.  But that possibility seems to be decreasing lately.

Winneshiek County officials say without additional road use funds, they will have to look for ways to cut spending on local roads.

Supervisor John Logsdon says it's possible the county would buy used road equipment instead of new equipment--or not buy any equipment at all.

Supervisor Les Askelson says it's likely the foremen at the five county road shops throughout the county would not be replaced when they retire.  Askelson says the long-range plan is to have one overall shop foreman instead of one at each shop.
