The issue of curbside recycling sparked disagreement Monday night among members of the city's Community Betterment Committee.
Committee members Rachel Vagts and Carolyn Corbin praised the concept, as did Decorah resident Lyle Otte, who noted, "curbside recycling would reduce driving to the (recycling) bins."
But committee member Gary Rustad said he was opposed to switching away from using the current recycling bins, calling them "One of the most successful recycling programs in the state." Committee member Randy Schissel also stated his opposition, stating, "We're dictating what people do--and I don't like that."
Committee member Julie Fischer said she also liked the concept, but noted, "Nothing has been decided."
Instead, an advisory committee will be set up to study how curbside recycling works in other communities. Corbin said volunteers are needed to serve on the advisory committee--contact her at carolyn@corbinconsulting.net if you're interested.
