OK, let's state the obvious about turkey vultures. As Raptor Resource Project Executive Director Bob Anderson notes, "It's not a lovely species."
But the…ummm.."appearance challenged" birds might be the newest stars of the Internet. That's because Anderson and the RRP volunteers are going to try to do for turkey vultures what they've done for the Decorah eagles—make them world famous.
A new "turkey vulture cam" is almost ready to go operational. "I'm really excited," says Anderson. He says the turkey vultures, while ugly, are perhaps the best fliers in the bird kingdom, able to gain lift just by turning and able to coast for long periods of time by using the thermals of the atmosphere.
And then there's the bird's appearance. Anderson guesses, "They're so ugly, I think it will work to their advantage."
