Tony e-mails: "In your story about the $10,000 fine imposed for missing the construction deadline on Segment #8 of Trout Run Trail, you didn't mention the name of the company that paid the fine. Who are you protecting?"
Mr. Answer Person says: "Sometimes, we just forget to put something in our news stories. There's no sinister motive--although thanks for suggesting that!
Here's how the story should have read:
"The City of Decorah has reached an agreement with Bruening Rock Products involving work to install box culverts on Middle Calmar Road. The contract for the project provided for fines of $500 a day for a late completion. The project took 115 days to complete instead of 70 days. City officials have agreed to accept $10,000 in penalties instead of $22,500, however. The $10,000 will be put into the bike trail account to help pay for other expenses."
