Luther College hires new Library and Information Services Director

Luther College President Richard Torgerson has named Paul Mattson executive director of library and information services at the college.

Mattson is currently affiliated with the IBM corporation in Rochester, Minn. where he is responsible for IBM Strategic Alliances.  At Luther he will lead the college's merged information services organization providing support for the library, academic, and administrative computing.
 
Mattson will begin working at Luther on March 1st.  He succeeds Christopher Barth, who directed Luther LIS operations from 2006-11 before accepting a position with the United States Military Academy at West Point, N.Y. 

Mattson is a 1981 graduate of Luther, earning the bachelor of arts degree in mathematics and computer science.  He holds the master of science degree in management of technology from MIT and the master of science degree in computer and information science from the University of Minnesota.
 
He has held a number of leadership positions at IBM over a period of more than 30 years.  He has been a leader of the IBM-Rochester Community and Technology College Smarter Planet Training Program, taught in the Luther College management information systems program during the 2009-10 academic year, teaches strategic technology in Augsburg College's MBA program and is an IBM founding faculty member in the University of Minnesota's bioinformatics and computational biology program in the area of business development.
