Gardeners in Iowa now have a new, updated plant hardiness zone map to consider as they make plant selection decisions this year.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has released the first update of the hardiness map since 1990.
Much of Iowa now considered "Zone 5," a warmer zone where plants are better able to survive the weather.
Except for most of Northeast Iowa. Large portions of Howard, Winneshiek, Allamakee, Fayette and Clayton counties are still classified "Zone 4."
