Caretakers Coalition proposes museum at Caretaker's House

Three members of the Caretakers Coalition appeared before the Winneshiek County Board on Monday to propose that the Caretaker's House at Wellington Place be turned into a museum.

Spokesperson Deborah Bishop told supervisors if the group could come up with $200 a month, it would pay the county $100 a month in rent and $100 towards restoration of the building.

The building would then be turned into a County Homes Museum and History Center.  Bishop said her group would then begin serious fundraising.

Supervisors took no immediate action on the proposal.  However, County Board Chairman Les Askelson said if the county started renting out the building, it would be forced to pay property taxes, which he said would be over $600 a year.
