Guatemalans returning to NE Iowa

Posted: Thu, Dec 8, 2011 6:41 PM

The Decorah Area Faith Coalition and the NE Iowa Peace & Justice Center are working to bring four Guatemalan men back to Northeast Iowa through the U-Visa Resettlement Project.

The men worked at the Agriprocessors plant in Postville at the time of the raid four years ago.  Because they were underaged at the time and their employment by Agri-Processors represented a violation of laws, they qualified to apply for a visa that would allow them to return to the United States—this time with a legal work permit.

Three of the men and their families will be living in the Ossian and Postville area, while a fourth will be living in the Waterloo area.

The Decorah groups are working to get housing for the four families as well as clothing and other necessities.  The Depot Outlet will be providing some clothing, but donations of blankets, towels and wash cloths are needed, as are winter coats.

The Decorah groups plan to provide financial support for each of the four families for the first three months they are in Northeast Iowa.

More information about donations is available from fundraising coordinator Steve Jacobsen at stevejake47@gmail.com.  Donations of items can be taken to the NE Iowa Peace & Justice Center.
