decorahnews.com reader urges reconsideration of evacuation plans

Decorah school officials were pleased that the school district's evacuation plan worked well after construction crews accidentally cut a gas line at Decorah High School.

But decorahnews.com reader John Bay e-mails that other communities have learned tough lessons about evacuation plans:

"In light of this school district (and others), building new and remodeling old school buildings, I recommend that every parent and school administrator read the newspaper article from Joplin, MO. published in "The Joplin Globe".

Just "google" the Joplin Globe, click on the article titled "School Administrators re-consider tornado evacuation plan" ...... then watch the footage from the school security cameras.  People can draw their own conclusions about our present tornado "drills."

(Editor's notes: The bond referendum approved by Decorah school district voters includes funds for a "safe room" at the Decorah High School.  The article referred to by John Bay appears at http://www.joplinglobe.com/local/x1295786233/Area-districts-reevaluating-policies-plans)
