After spending the early part of September around Lake Superior, young bald eagle "D1" has decided to head south--somewhat.
Volunteers for the Raptor Resource Project attached a GPS tracking unit to D1 earlier this year in July. They have used that transmitter to follow D1's movements.
The young bald eagle headed north from Decorah in August, which was unexpected. D1 spent quite a bit of time along the St. Croix River, which divides northern Minnesota and northern Wisconsin.
But the latest GPS tracking information for November shows D1 is now just north of Black River Falls, Wisconsin--near Neillsville. This information is more in line with what the researchers expected--that the young bald eagle would spend the winter months near the Mississippi River, where there is more open water and thus, more fish.
