Survey: Winneshiek Medical Center provides $3.8 million in community benefits

According to the Iowa Hospital Association, Winneshiek Medical Center provides $3,849,743 in community benefits to the Northeast Iowa region.

The 2010 figure includes $3,180,600 in uncompensated care and $669,143 in free or discounted community benefits that Winneshiek Medical Center specifically implemented to help Northeast Iowa residents.

Uncompensated care includes charity care, bad debt and unpaid costs from Medicare and Medicaid.  Community benefits include such services and programs as health screenings, support groups, counseling, immunizations, nutritional services and clinical experiences for students entering health professions.  

The results for Winneshiek Medical Center are included in a statewide report by the Iowa Hospital Association that shows Iowa hospitals provided community benefits in 2010 valued at more than $1.3 billion.
