City officials asked to help solve problems involving semis delivering goods to the Sears store

The City of Decorah's Streets Committee was asked for help Monday night with damage being done to private property by semis delivering goods to the Decorah Sears store.

Property owner Steven Olson says many times semis have pulled up into his driveway, cracking the cement.  He says the semis have also pulled through his yard, causing deep tire ruts.  Olson put concrete bumpers at the bottom of the driveway and steel posts in his yard, but the semis have run over the bumpers.

City council member Randy Schissel agreed that Olson "has a right to protect his property."  City council member Gary Rustad questioned whether the problem wasn't a police department issue, rather than a street committee issue.  Olson believes the city should get involved because the semis cause a very real traffic hazard on a very busy street.

City officials told Olson they would put up "no parking" signs along the street and also look for other solutions to the problem.  The road might be used as a detour when the Highway 9 Trout Run Trail bridge is built, so city officials say they want a solution to the problem.
