Hospital to offer free diabetes screening Tuesday

Posted: Mon, Oct 31, 2011 4:49 PM

Winneshiek Medical Center is offering a free finger-stick blood glucose check for diabetes from 7:00 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. Tuesday in the lower level meeting rooms of the medical center.

Open to all members of the community, the clinic aims to promote diabetes awareness and prevention.  Fasting is recommended but not required.

Along with this free blood glucose reading, Winneshiek Medical Center diabetes educators and dietitians will measure height, weight and BMI, as well as guide participants through the diabetes education experience at the hospital.

People with a high risk for type 2 diabetes are those who are overweight, sedentary, over the age of 45 and have a family history of diabetes.  African Americans, Latinos, Native Americans, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders are also at an increased risk, as are women who have had babies weighing more than nine pounds at birth.

WMC urges community members to take advantage of this opportunity to learn more about diabetes and diabetes prevention.  For more information about the clinic, please call Winneshiek Medical Center at (563) 382-2911.
