Winneshiek County used to have a problem with people driving to their highway shops and taking sand to use during the winter. County Engineer Lee Bjerke says now that motion-detecting cameras have been installed at the highway shops, the theft of road sand has stopped.
But Bjerke says there may need to be one more improvement made at the highway shops. He says the count's insurance carrier is lobbying to have all the highway shop properties fenced in. Bjerke says that's not so much to prevent thefts as it is to keep people out of the highway shop yards—and preventing possible injuries to trespassers.
