4-H program gives kids a taste of local government

The "4-H Citizenship Club" is a new program designed to give 4-H members a better understanding of how government works.

The club is operating under a two year plan, focusing this year on local and state government and next year on the federal government.  The club plans to visit the State Capitol this March and to take a trip to Washington D.C., in the spring of 2013.

Members of the Winneshiek County 4-H Citizenship Group have gotten a chance to meet with Decorah Mayor Don Arendt to discuss the City of Decorah.  Arendt talked with the 4-Hers about the roles of city and county employees, city organization, taxes, city ordinances and the Decorah City Council.  4-Hers also received a tour of the Decorah City Hall and the Decorah Fire Department.

If you have any questions or are interested in learning more about the 4-H Citizenship Group or 4-H, please contact Joni Bruvold at the Winneshiek County Extension Office, 563/382-2949.
