About 20 years ago, then John Cline Elementary Principal Clark Goltz began to realize that many elementary students were being deprived of a carton of milk for an afternoon snack because the children's' parents were unable to afford it.
That led him to create the "Extra Semester Milk Fund." A number of organizations have supported the fund over the years, but the need for funds has started growing in recent years.
This year the fund is $765 short. That led the Decorah Lions Club to answer a call for help. The Lions have just donated $250 to the fund.
That has helped, although further donations are still needed. They can be sent to the District office, or to either John Cline or Carrie Lee Schools. Checks can be made to Decorah Schools, with the memo line indicating "semester milk".
