A 17-year-old Decorah High School student who collapsed last Thursday evening while running in a cross country meet in Cedar Falls has now been released from the Mayo Clinic and has returned home. The teen's name has not been released.
One of the spectators at the event was a doctor. He administered CPR until two Cedar Falls police officers arrived on the scene and used an automated external defibrillator to jump-start the teen's heart. The shocks revived the student, who was then taken to a Waterloo hospital and eventually transferred to the Mayo Clinic.
Cedar Falls police have been carrying the defibrillators in each squad car for about eight years.
