Motorcycle rider's life may have been saved by his helmet

An Evansdale, Iowa man was blinded by the setting sun on Old Stage Road Sunday night.  Jacob Johnson did not see a curve in the roadway because of the sun, so he continued straight, driving off the right hand side of the roadway.

Johnson collided with the ditch, several large limestone rocks and a steel culvert before coming to rest.  He was taken by ambulance to the Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah.

Police say Johnson was wearing a DOT approved helmet, which saved his life.
