Winneshiek County Board schedules September 11 remembrance

The Winneshiek County Board of Supervisors is urging all county residents to join them on Sunday for a minute of remembrance of September 11th, 2001.  County residents are being urged to lower their U.S. flags to half staff Sunday morning.  Then at 11:59 a.m., everyone is asked to pause for a minute of silence and remembrance of the citizens killed ten years ago and of the emergency responders who died attempting to save others.

At noon, churches are asked to ring their bells or chimes for a minute.  Fire fighters may sound their vehicle sirens in honor of the responders that lost their lives in service to others that day.  Following this minute of silent remembrance, church bells ringing and emergency sirens sounding, the United States flags should be raised to full staff.

Local officials have rejected a suggestion to observe the 10th anniversary of September 11th by sounding sirens.  In discussion with the joint 911 dispatch center, it was considered that there are many people that are still nervous about future attacks.  Therefore it is being suggested that cities NOT sound their weather/attack sirens.
