New doctor starts work at WMC's clinic

Doctor of osteopathic medicine Laurie Tope has joined the staff of Mayo Clinic Health System physicians at Winneshiek Medical Center.  She grew up in West Union and says she is pleased to be returning to Northeast Iowa to care for area patients. 

Dr. Tope specializes in general family medicine with a special interest in pediatrics and women's health.

"I approach health care holistically," she says.  "Everything in our body is interconnected and it is important to treat the whole patient, not just the area of concern."

Dr. Tope says she takes a hands-on approach to medicine.  For example, if a patient comes in with back pain, she may adjust his or her back alongside medication therapy.

Dr. Tope received her Bachelor of Science in biology and psychology from Iowa State University and her medical degree from Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine.  She completed her residency in family medicine at Mercy medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.
