Coordinators of the Decorah Reads! program are seeking 15 volunteers for a September/ October session.
Decorah Reads! is a partnership between Decorah Public Library and Kris Lynch's 7th grade exploratory reading class. The program matches adult volunteers with 7th grade students for three book discussion meetings. Volunteers make a commitment to attend all three meetings in the chosen session. Students choose a fiction book to read and adult volunteers find their student match by selecting a book from the students' list of titles. As a pair, the volunteer and student both read the book and meet three times to discuss it.
Through the Decorah Reads! program students learn about discussing a book with another person and they also receive encouragement from their adult partner. Adult volunteers have the opportunity to revisit childhood favorites, experience what is currently popular in young adult fiction, and to nourish their partners' enjoyment of reading.
For the September/October session, adults may pick books up at the Decorah Public Library beginning Thursday Sept. 15. Please note the new Thursday afternoon day/time. Meeting dates include Thursday Sept. 22, Thursday Sept. 29, and Thursday Oct. 6. The first two meetings will be held at Decorah Public Library from 2:15-2:35 p.m. The final meeting will take place from 2:10-2:40 p.m. at Decorah Middle School.
A second group of volunteers will be needed for a session taking place on Tuesday afternoons in November; dates and times to be decided.
Please call Decorah Public Library at 563-382-3717 for more information or to sign up as a volunteer.
