Organizers of an all-school reunion at the Highlandville School are hoping to get out the word during Nordic Fest about their planned event.
Because organizers have been unable to get addresses for many of the Highlandville School students, they're hoping some publicity during Nordic Fest, when many Decorah natives return home, will be a help.
The Highlandville School reunion will begin at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, September 3rd, with the dedication of a flag pole, music, speakers, sharing of memories and photos, and a potluck picnic supper at 5:30 p.m.
On Sunday, September 4th, the public is invited to attend a benefit dance at the schoolhouse with music by Decorah's popular Scandinavian-American old time dance band, Foot-Notes, from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 pm. Admission is $5 per adult. All funds received will go toward the maintenance of the schoolhouse.
The Highlandville School Centennial Committee is raising funds to preserve the building for years to come. Donations may be sent to Vernoe M. Whitaker/Highlandville School, 1626 Hickory Hill Rd., Decorah, IA 52101. Donations may also be made through the website www.blotterinc.com/Highlandville_School_Centennial. A Facebook page has been set up for the event as well: "The Highlandville Schoolhouse – 100 years old." Centennial T-shirts and can koozies are available for purchase from the Committee members and at the Highland General Store and Campground; all proceeds will go toward upkeep of the schoolhouse.
