Coins seized from 64-year-old Robert Neuzil of Fort Atkinson have been sold at an auction in order to pay off Neuzil's court fines and reimburse the government for the federal public defender who represented him.
The U.S. Attorney's office in Cedar Rapids says the sale of Neuzil's large coin collection fetched more than $21,000. The money will be used to pay off expenses related to his conviction on weapons charges.
Neuzil claimed he could not afford an attorney after he was charged in 2009. But when they learned of his coin collection, they began the process of using money from the sale of the coins to pay the costs of a public defender.
Neuzil was arrested in Winneshiek County while driving toward Minnesota after warning his wife he was coming to kill her. Her family and officers found several weapons. Neuzil pleaded guilty to three counts of possessing unregistered firearms.
