Mona Nelson will not seek re-election to the Decorah School Board

Longtime Decorah School Board member Mona Nelson has announced that this term will be her last on the board.

Nelson is completing 15 years of school board service, including nine years as school board president.  The school district and the community were beginning discussions about the solutions for the old middle school building and the East Side school when she joined the board in 1996.  Through nine ballot issues the school district eventually built the new middle school, renovated the Carrie Lee building, and is starting the renovation of the high school.  Nelson says maintaining a focus on student achievement and the learning environment has been the most interesting part of school board service.

The Decorah School Board election is on Tuesday, September 13th.  Nelson holds a city director position, which means a candidate seeking the position must live within the Decorah city limits.  The newly elected director will serve a 4-year term.

Information about Iowa school board elections and director candidacy is available at the Iowa School Board Association website,
