FEMA flood insurance for Decorah property owners now can be for up to $250,000 in coverage, as opposed to the present limit of $35,000.
FEMA had initially placed the city of Decorah in its "Emergency" Program in 2008 when the city first started participating in the National Flood Insurance Program. FEMA took this action because it had a "Special Flood Hazard Boundary Map" from Decorah instead of the more detailed Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM).
FEMA has now prepared a D-FIRM for Decorah but has not officially adopted the map yet. Nevertheless, they have converted Decorah to the NFIP's Regular Program, given that the mapping had been done and the criteria for this conversion has been met.
Property owners in Decorah who wish to buy additional flood insurance should simply contact their insurance agent for more information.
