The Winneshiek County Sheriff's Department says a Calmar man received injuries Tuesday in a motorcycle accident on County Road B-16 east of Spillville.
William Wentworth was driving westbound on County Road B-16 and took evasive action when a deer ran into the roadway. Wentworth's motorcycle collided with the deer, ejecting Wentworth onto the road. The motorcycle slid onto the south shoulder of the roadway. Wentworth was found lying in the middle of the roadway by several other motorists.
Wentworth was transported to the Winneshiek Medical Center Emergency Room for further evaluation. Sheriff's deputies say the accident may have been fatal if Wentworth had not been wearing a helmet.
Wentworth was released from Winneshiek Medical Center Wednesday with a broken clavicle and numerous bruises, contusions and abrasions.
The Sheriff Department was assisted at the accident by the Calmar Police Department, Winneshiek County 1st Responders and the WInneshiek Medical Center ambulance.
The news release from the Sheriff's Department concluded, "Even though motorcycle helmets are not required to be worn on Iowa roadways, photos of Wentworth's helmet and the condition of the motorcycle show that motorcycle helmets can and do save lives."
