Last May decorahnews.com reported that The National Center for Charitable Statistics had named 13 Decorah non-profit organizations as being at risk of losing their tax-exempt status if they did not file an IRS Form 990.
Those 13 Decorah-based non-profit organizations--Black Earth Collaborative Arts Company; Decorah Rotary Club Scholarship Foundation Inc.; Decorah Senior Citizens Center; Luther College Chapter of American Guild of Organists; Luther College Omicron Delta Epsilon Economics Honor Society; Luther College Pi Kappa Lambda Epsilon Omega Music Society; Madison 4-H Club; Madison Lutheran Cemetery Association; Northeast Iowa People for Animal Welfare; 1903-1909 Early Ford Registry Inc.; Washington Future Scholars Fund; Washington Prairie Peppers; and the Winneshiek County Dairy Club--either filed the IRS Form 990 or officially closed down.
Now, however, the Des Moines Register is identifying another 17 Decorah non-profit organizations it says could lose their non-profit status for failure to file federal reports for three consecutive years. The newspaper reports the organizations could potentially face payment of thousands of dollars of income and property taxes. And future donations to the organizations will no longer be tax deductible.
Many of the organizations are small and thought to be defunct.
