On May 8, students from Decorah High School Culture Club traveled to The Festival of Nations in St. Paul, Minnesota. The Festival of Nations is one of the nation's largest and longest multicultural events. There, the students were immersed in 90 different cultures from around the world. Students had the opportunity to try many different types of cultural food from almost 40 different vendors. The students also had the chance to view 60 educational exhibits from the individual country focused on this years theme, marketplaces of the world. Students had the opportunity to purchase a mock passport that each educational exhibit stamped marking your visit to their country. Some exhibitors even wrote your name in their native language. Students could also enjoy the 75 different ethnic dance performances presented in the three stage areas. The Festival of Nations also had a bazaar shopping area. The different countries had their own booth selling cultural souvenirs.
Most of the students participating in the Festival of Nations trip are also involved in the DHS Culture Club. The Culture Club was started by four high school students, Dailen Folkedahl, Sam Iverson, Brad Suhr, and Nick VadeKrol. They started the Culture Club to promote cultural awareness and education in the high school. This is part of their Community Problem Solving project.
