19 Decorah Middle School students and their sponsor, Sarah Nowack, participated in the Disney Planet Challenge during this school year. The competition encouraged students to work on environmental programs.
Students met after school and during their lunch breaks to discuss environmental concerns they have. Then they planned a local project that focused on animal habitats. The students cleaned up streams by picking up trash. They built wood duck boxes with the help of Ducks Unlimited and placed them around the county. They helped the DNR with a population count of aspen trees, an ongoing project focusing on the habitats of ruffed grouse. They also helped Friends of the Fish Hatchery to promote and raise money for the building of an educational and restroom facility along the trail at the Trout Hatchery.
