City committee wants cost estimates for repairs to Phelps Park road and wall

The City of Decorah's Street Committee is asking City Engineer Lindsay Erdman to draw up cost estimates for redoing the road that runs through Phelps Park, as well as the wall that protects traffic from driving off the cliff.

Committee members Monday night discussed several options, including even closing the park drive to traffic.  But Erdman noted, "It's a pretty popular drive."

He suggested instead repaving the street using concrete and narrowing the street so that it wasn't as close to the cliff.  He also said adding curbs to the street would do a better job of defining which portion was for vehicular traffic and which portion was intended for bikes and pedestrians.

Committee chair Gary Rustad said the entire committee was interested in keeping traffic safe through the park, but he noted that the committee had many other road projects and needed a way to prioritize the projects.  Erdman promised to come back to the committee with a cost estimate for the work.  He guessed the project would cost in the range of $100,000.
