Third and fourth graders at Carrie Lee Elementary School in Decorah got the word on Thursday. In fact, they didn't just get one word—they had a whole school full of words as they wrapped up a yearlong study of vocabulary by dressing up as their favorite word. The students paraded around the school gym by class, showing off their chosen vocabulary words to an appreciate audience of teachers and parents. Carrie Lee Principal Cheryl Sommers had just the right words to describe the event—she called it "exciting" and "stupendous."
Teacher Andrew Ramaekers showed the meaning of the phrase "science fiction." Kayla Oftedahl was "flower girl." Two brothers were perfect to show the meaning of "reflection." Lillian Smith was a "litterbug." Amy Shedinger was a "monarch"—butterfly, that is.
