Five Decorah students from both Carrie Lee Elementary School and Decorah Middle School enjoyed some success at the third annual Elementary Math Tournament, sponsored by Dubuque Community Schools and Loras College.  Approximately 40 teams from eastern Iowa competed in the event.

Fourth grader Ben Johnson took second place overall in the individual component of the competition, getting eight out of ten difficult problems correct.  He had to battle his way through a two-way tiebreaker to clinch second place, answering five questions before the tie was finally broken.

Fifth-grader James Paulson also took part in an extra round with five other students, all battling for fifth place. Third grader Andrew Magner placed tenth, despite the fact that the competition is for fourth and fifth graders.

The Carrie Lee students met with further success when they placed third in the team event.  The team consisted of third graders Isaac Roberts and Andrew Magner and fourth graders Natalie Tapscott, Ben Johnson and Sophie Weis.  The team was coached by Rhonda Thompson.

The Middle School team, coached by Angie Peltz, consisted of fifth-graders Dawson Bauer, Jarod Phillips, Luke Stock, James Paulson and Carina Yee.
