The Decorah Community School Board has reviewed the latest plan for the joint school and community tennis courts project. The plan calls for six courts (north/south playing surface) along Claiborne Drive with a corridor in the middle of the six courts that can be used for storage and coaching access. The courts will feature a portable, non-post, netting system. A sidewalk will run along Claiborne Drive from near John Cline to the end of the courts (next to the existing city softball diamond).
The next critical step is for Superintendent Mike Halusku to iron out the specifics of the intended 50/50 cost sharing agreement with the City of Decorah. The site involved includes both school district property and city property. Ideally the Parks and Recreation Board will have approved the final stages of the plan and working agreements prior to a bid release on May 23. That schedule could allow for bids to be opened on Jun 13, and a project completion by October.
The project will eventually result in the reconfiguration of a new John Cline playground space, as well a significant increase in green space play areas. The new playground will have a much safer surface area and greatly increase ADA accessibility. Some of that work will begin this summer, with completion planned for next year.
