Yes, Tuesday's snowstorm came at a time of the year when thoughts are turning to lawn mowers, not snow shovels. But it wasn't the latest date ever for measurable snowfall in Decorah.
Decorah weather statistician Richard Bernatz says records indicate the latest recorded snowfall was 2 inches on April 29th of 1956.
Counting this April, snowfall has been recorded in Decorah in 21 out of 119 years of data. But eight of those 21 Aprils with at least an inch of snow have come in the last 21 Aprils, says Bernatz, so it seems to occurring more frequently in recent years.
The heaviest monthly total of snowfall in April in Decorah was in 1973, when 14 inches of snow fell.
The National Weather Service says 4.8 inches of snow fell Tuesday in Calmar.
