Three Decorah Middle School students have received special commendation for their entries in the 2011 "Letters About Literature Contest." The three 6th grade students recognized for their writing are Adam Krieger (semifinalist), Sylvia Betteridge (finalist), and Helen Johnson (finalist). These students were among the top 50 of the 532 students in the state who entered the Level I competition.
Participating students first considered how books had impacted their lives. Students then wrote a personal letter to an author explaining how his or her work has inspired them to change their view of themselves or the world.
Letters About Literature is a program of the Center for the Book in the
Library of Congress in partnership with Target Stores. The Iowa Center for the Book, a program of the State Library of Iowa, is the Iowa sponsor.
