Former President Bill Clinton has praised the work of Luther College senior Junette Maxis of Haiti and has presented her with the Clinton Global Initiative University Outstanding Commitment Award. Maxis was recognized for her work in organizing and establishing an economic recovery project in her earthquake-devastated home country.
As a recipient of the Outstanding Commitment Award, Maxis will receive a grant worth between $1,000 and $10,000 towards implementing her commitments. The final amount will be determined through another application process. "In a country like Haiti where education seems to be a luxury, there is a need for alternative ways to learn about important issues related to survival in unexpected situations," Maxis said. "The objective of this commitment is to take knowledge from books and elsewhere, everything from health management to electrical security, and translate it into Creole."
