"Spell-a-Thon 2011" taking place this week

Posted: Sun, Apr 10, 2011 3:38 PM

Spelling tests will be given to all Decorah students in kindergarten through 6th grade this week.  It's part of the Decorah PTO's "Spell-a-Thon 2011" to raise money for the Decorah Schools.

Students have been collecting pledges from family, friends and neighbors for contributions to the Decorah school district, based on how many words the students spell correctly.

In 2009, this event raised over $28,000.   Money raised was given to Decorah Schools Library Collections, West Side/Community Natural Playground, Kid Striders, the purchase of a spotlight in the Carrie Lee Elementary Auditorium and many other programs and teacher specific requests at each school.

Proceeds from this year's fundraiser will help fund upcoming Author Visits, Special Events, the Back-to-School Pool Party, and other general needs and purposes of our schools.

All students in grades K-6 who return their completed pledge envelope will have their name entered into a drawing at their school for a gift certificate from a local merchant.  The classroom that collects the most pledges will be awarded a pizza party and the student who raises the most pledges will receive a $100 savings bond from Decorah Bank and Trust.
