Fifty actors and actresses from the North Winneshiek student body have begun rehearsals for their production of "Sleeping Beauty." The performances will take place at 3:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. this Saturday in the school gym. Ticket prices are $6/adults and $3/child. Between the two performances the public is invited to take part in a hot chicken/stuffing sandwich supper with salads and desserts. The money raised by the meal will be used to help offset the cost of the production.
With the guidance of Missoula Children's' Theatre directors Heather Baker and Hannah Woods, students will rehearse daily to learn lines, movement, dance, and the intricacies of the stage. Kindergarten through eighth grade students from North Winneshiek have been participating in MCT productions in alternate years since 2001. The plays are developed from classical fairy tales with singing and dancing and colorful costumes adding to the experience. During the week-long residency, the two directors also provide workshop sessions for all students in three different levels. Workshops this year include Behind the Scenes (6-8th grades), explaining the process of role-play to increase communications skills and constructive group dynamics; Makeup for grades pre-school through second; Three C's, an interactive workshop about acting with humorous examples and theatre games about Communication, Creativity and Concentration for grades 3-5.
