Local groups getting ready in case there is spring flooding

Posted: Tue, Mar 1, 2011 4:29 PM

When flooding or other disasters strike Winneshiek County, local groups want to be prepared.  That's why they are working to form a Citizens Emergency Response Team of trained volunteers to organize and lead the hundreds of other volunteers in case of an emergency.

Also needed will be National Information Management System (NIMS) trained staff and volunteers to be ready for instructions and orders from the Emergency Operations Center during a disaster.

The Winneshiek-Allamakee Long Term Recovery Committee is helping with the recruitment of volunteers for training, the provision and effective management from day one of a Disaster Relief Fund; the coordination of efforts to meet needs post disaster; and the provision of a volunteer representative to sit on the Emergency Management Commission, the board that oversees functions such as the Emergency Operations
Center.
