The fate of the Caretakers House is still in the hands of the Oneota Historic Future Alliance

Members of the Caretakers Coalition met Monday with Winneshiek County supervisors to again discuss the fate of the Caretakers House at Wellington Place, but supervisors told the group the county's contract is with the Oneota Historic Future Alliance.

About a dozen people spoke in favor of preserving the building, which is located on county-owned land in Freeport. They presented a handout listing 19 organizations and individuals who might play a role in preserving the building.

But county supervisor Bill Ibanez said the handout was "just smoke and mirrors" unless the Caretakers Coalition could reach an agreement with the Oneota Historic Future Alliance to lease the building.

County Board Chairman Les Askelson said the county board has a contract with the Oneota Historic Future Alliance calling for the building to be demolished by April 30th if a tenant for the building can't be found. "We haven't heard anything different from them," said Askelson.
